Originated from the Teaching and Research Department of Marxism and Leninism established in 1965, the School of Marxism, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies has had its present form since 2014, which in turn evolved from the School of Ideological and Political Theory established in 2011.

The School is responsible for the teaching of ideological and political theory courses for the university undergraduates and postgraduates, the research on Marxist theory as academic discipline, and the masters program in Marxist theory. The School consists of six teaching departments for: basic principles of Marxism; Chinese modern history; Mao Zedong Thought and the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics; ideological and moral cultivation and law; current affairs, policy and social practice; and postgraduate education.

The School boasts a cohesive team of faculty, including two provincially recognized master teachers, three Ph.D. supervisors and 14 supervisors for masters program.

The School was authorized to confer the masters degree in Marxist theory as tier-two discipline in 2005 and in 2010 as tier-one discipline, including Marxism in the Chinese context, ideological political education, and principles of Marxism as tier-two disciplines.

The School of Marxism currently has seven research centers: Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; the CPC history and party-building; Leninism; the Four-pronged Comprehensive Strategy; comparative study of ideological and political education; overseas research on Marxism; and research on Marxism in the Chinese context.

Upholding its founding philosophy of solidarity, truth and innovation, the School of Marxism has been dedicated to cultivating moral standards and mastery of both foreign languages and program-specific knowledge so as to nurture innovative, global-minded and responsible citizens with a deep love of the country.
